How do I design my merch? Do I need my own designs?

You’ll need to provide your own designs, but we will help you design the mockups and set them up finalize your merchandise. Assistance from our design team is also available to ensure your products look great.

If you don’t have your own designs yet, you can hire our highly skilled design team to create the design for you at membership prices. The product set up of one product will also be included.

How are prices for merchandise determined?

Our pricing strategy depends on whether you apply to the Cost Price Strategy or Premium Prices.

1. Cost Price Strategy

This approach is ideal if you view merchandise primarily as a marketing tool and expect sales of less than 40 items per year. Here’s how it works:

  • Pricing Formula: Cost of goods sold + VAT + Price Rounding buffer (to nearest  $5 increment).
  • Why Choose This? Since the per-unit cost is slightly higher due to on-demand handling, margins on the products are effectively zero after printing, transaction costs, and so on. This strategy keeps the costs low for your fans spreading your brand and making you stand out compared to other artists. Having a merch tab on Spotify will improve the overall algorithmic health since you utilize all available functions. This strategy also simplifies bookkeeping since there are no payouts or invoicing involved, especially for artists who are private individuals and don’t have a company.
  • Example: the cost of a t-shirt is $11, Swedish VAT is 25% –> 13.75, rounded up to $15 which is the price you’ll see in the store.

2. Premium Strategy

This option is for artists looking to monetize their brand and expecting sales of more than 40 items per year at a premium price level. You’ll need to apply for premium prices here.

  • Pricing Formula: Cost of goods sold + margin + 25% VAT.
  • Why Choose This? It allows you to earn higher profits per product, positioning your merch as a premium offering. Depending on the market prices, cost per items sold and your goals we’ll together set the prices with reasonable margins.
  • Example:  the cost of a t-shirt is $11, we add a margin of 50%–> 16,5 + Swedish VAT of 25% –> $20.625  rounded to the closest $5 increment so we’ll set $20 in this case in the store.

Can I sell merch internationally? Are there shipping restrictions?

Yes, our service enables international sales. Shipping costs and times vary by destination but our merch supplier have multiple handling locations around the world ensuring fast shipping times and low costs for your fans. Some restrictions may apply to specific countries due to logistics or legal constraints.

What marketing support is available for promoting my merchandise?

We provide guidance to help you promote your merchandise effectively across social media platforms and your own channels. Exclusive promotional campaigns can also be arranged.

Also multiple sales channels such as in Spotify, as well as in our own shop. Additional sales channels are in development.

Can I offer exclusive merchandise to my fans?

Absolutely! We support limited edition runs and exclusives for fan clubs or special events, allowing you to create unique merchandise offerings for your most dedicated fans.

Who owns the rights to the merchandise designs?

Artists retain full rights to their designs used on merchandise. Our service is designed to empower artists, ensuring they maintain control over their creative works. You only need to give us the right to sell your merch via our platforms.

What Is Considered a Product Setup?

A product setup refers to the creation of a single product page in our merch store. Here’s how we define it:

  1. Single Product with Variations:
    • A t-shirt from a specific make (brand/type) with one design is considered a single product setup.
    • You can have multiple colors and a wide range of sizes, and it will still be treated as one product setup.
  2. New Product Setup:
    • If you switch to a different make or style (e.g., changing from a standard t-shirt to a premium t-shirt), even if the design remains the same, it is considered a new product setup.
    • Each unique combination of make and design requires its own product setup.
  3. Examples:
    • One Product Setup: A single design printed on a t-shirt available in black, white, and navy, with sizes ranging from S to XXL.
    • Two Product Setups: The same design printed on both a standard t-shirt and a hoodie.

How does the On-Demand Merch service work?

Here’s the workflow from today to start selling merch on Spotify.

  1. Invite us to your Spotify for Artists
  2. Create or gather your designs and submit a new product setup request.
  3. We set up mockups and products
  4. Approve products or revise
  5. Product pages are published to our merch store, and applicable sales channels like Spotify.
  6. Start Selling
  7. Once a product is sold, it’s manufactured and shipped directly to the fan.
  8. We handle customer support and potential returns etc.
  9. Handling of payments, orders, and commission payouts (for Premium plans)

Are there any upfront costs or fees to start selling merch?

There are no upfront costs to start selling your merchandise. Our service operates on a print-on-demand model, where costs are deducted once a sale is made, ensuring artists can start with minimal financial risk.

However, we charge a small yearly subscription for support,  and a one-time fee for the set-up of your store and the customization per product.

If you don’t have the underlying merch design we can also help to create those as a service. Such as logos, symbols etc.

What’s the profit margin for artists on merchandise sales?

Profit margins vary based on the product cost, the pricing strategy (see how prices are determined). If the artist is applicable for the premium pricing strategy we will provide a recommended retail price, but artists have the flexibility to adjust pricing based on their strategy, ensuring a fair profit margin. Most artists in their early careers however view merch more as a branding rather than a profit machine, where the cost-based pricing strategy is recommended.

Since products are printed on demand and handling is part of the cost, you can expect lower per-item-margins than if you purchased the item from a manufacturer. However, then you need to reckon with the initial upfront costs, handling of orders, shipping and returns.

How and when do I get paid for my merchandise sales?

For the cost-based strategy, we aim for no margins at all and hence there are no profits to pay out.

For the Premium Prices Strategy payments are made after a threshold of $100 is met, via bank transfer, PayPal, Stripe or Wise and based on the sales history. A detailed sales report is provided to track earnings and transactions through your merchant account available to artists applicable for the Premium Price Strategy.

How is customer service handled for merchandise orders?

Our team handles all customer service inquiries, including returns and exchanges, ensuring a seamless experience for your fans. Artists can focus on their creativity while we manage the logistics.

How can I track my merchandise sales and performance?

For the Premium Pricing strategy, the merchant dashboard offers real-time analytics on sales, enabling you to make informed decisions about your merchandise offerings.

For cost-based strategy, you’ll receive an email notification for each sale made via our stores.

What environmental or ethical considerations does the On-Demand Merch service have?

We’re committed to sustainability and ethical manufacturing practices, offering eco-friendly product options and ensuring fair labor conditions in all production facilities.

Since there are production facilities in multiple locations, the order is routed to the closest location to the fan that made the order, saving shipping and is a more climate efficient approach than a single location.

What Colors Are Available for My Merchandise?

The available colors for your merchandise depend on the specific product and brand you choose. We offer a wide range of colors, including classic options like black, white, navy, and red, as well as specialty colors such as heather blends, tie-dye, and camo patterns. However, not all colors are available for every product.

For the most accurate color selection:

  1. Visit our merch store to see available colors for your chosen product.
  2. Use the product name or link when submitting your merch request to ensure accurate matching as well as the colors specified in the “Other” form field.

If you have a specific color in mind but are unsure if it’s available, feel free to reach out to our merch team for assistance or add it to the special instructions field! We’re here to help you create the perfect design.
